Caliban in The Tempest by William Shakespeare
Caliban is a central character in William Shakespeare's "The Tempest". He represents a complex symbol of various themes like colonization, oppression, and the relationship between man and nature.
Caliban is initially introduced as the son of the witch Sycorax and the only native inhabitant of the island where most of he action of the play takes place. He is a deformed, half-human, half-beast character. He is seen as being wild, uncivilized, living in harmony with the island's natural elements.
Caliban becomes a servant to Prospero, the protagonist of the play and once Duke of Milan.
